Jack W. and Michael W. Van Dyke Memorial Scholarship

It was the desire of Geneva Van Dyke Hansen to help others by providing this $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior from the Zeeland High Schools.  It is given in memory of her son, Jack, and grandson, Mike, a 1996 graduate of ZHS.  Both father and son demonstrated their giftedness and exceptional technical abilities as they overcame challenges in their lives.  Their self-taught knowledge and analytical minds guided them to success as they pursued their interests in the mechanical and computer science fields, respectively.  Their lives encourage us to persevere through our own unique journey in life.

Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:

- Applicants must be graduating seniors from Zeeland East or Zeeland West High School.
- Applicants must be accepted to a two or four-year accredited college, university or vocational/technical school.
- Applicants must be planning to pursue a degree or certification in a technical field or computer science.
- Financial need is a consideration but not a requirement.
- One letter of recommendation must be from someone at the student’s school or another learning environment such as Careerline Tech, and the second must be from someone outside of the applicant’s school
experience, who is not related to the applicant.
- Rather than an essay, please provide a brief written response to both of the following questions:
  1) What struggle, challenge, loss, or adversity have you faced or are you
presently working through and how has it shaped the person you are?

  2) Those who knew them well described Jack and Mike as self-learners
with analytical minds, who each overcame adversity as they found
success.  Both Jack and Mike were gifted with technical abilities that were
expressed in the diesel mechanic and computer science fields,
respectively.  How do you feel you reflect the spirit of these two individuals
for whom the scholarship was established?

The scholarship is renewable for one additional year.
