Exclusive to Black River Students

Ian Guarr Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship, established in memory of Ian Guarr, is awarded to a graduating Black River Public School Senior who demonstrates an avid interest and proficiency in music, writing or mathematics. The scholarship will award up to $5,200 to the selected recipient over a four year period; $1,000 the first year, $1,200 the second year, $1,400 the third year, and $1,600 the fourth year.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
• Demonstration of an avid interest and proficiency in music, writing, or mathematics during their studies at Black River. Candidates do not necessarily need to pursue these fields in college.
• Academic success as demonstrated by a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher
• U.S. Citizenship
• Academic excellence as demonstrated by a 3.0 GPA or higher
• Leadership and service to Black River High School and the Holland/Zeeland community
• Financial need
• Enrollment in a 2 or 4 year accredited college or university

Brooks Family Minority Scholarship Fund

The Brooks Family Minority Scholarship Fund was established to celebrate the diversity of the Holland community.  This scholarship is a renewable scholarship for eight consecutive semesters in progressive amounts of $1,000 in the first year, $2,000 in the second year, $3,000 in the third year and $4,000 in the fourth year.  Scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors from Black River or Holland High School.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
• Permanent resident of the City of Holland for the last three years
• Racial or ethnic minority
• U.S. Citizenship
• Academic excellence as demonstrated by a 3.0 GPA or ACT composite score of 20 or higher
• A record of community activities and leadership positions in extra curricular activities with a promise of outstanding leadership in the future
• Financial need
Applicants will be selected by the Scholarship Selection Committee of the Community Foundation of the Holland Zeeland Area.

Chris Martin Memorial Art Scholarship

This scholarship was established in memory of Christian Martin who attended Black River Public School from 1997 to 1999.  This $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a Black River student who shows commitment and an interest in learning in the visual arts.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
• Candidates must be enrolled in a 2 or 4 year accredited college or university or a technical / vocational training center.  It is not necessary that candidates be planning to pursue a degree or career in the visual arts
• Candidates must demonstrate an interest and proficiency in the visual arts.  They need not be top academic performers in the visual arts or other school curricula but, relative to the visual arts, they must show strong commitment, a genuine interest in learning and continuous improvement of artistic skills
• Candidates must be in good standing in their school and in the community and exemplify the characteristics of citizenship reflective of Black River Public School

Community Service Scholarship of the Community Foundation

The Community Service Scholarship awards a $500 scholarship to one male and one female student from each of the following schools: Black River, Holland High School, Holland Christian High School, West Ottawa High School, Zeeland East High School, and Zeeland West High School. Members of the Foundation’s Youth Advisory Committee support the school selection committees in the nomination process.
Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
• Academic excellence as demonstrated by a minimum high school GPA of 3.0.
• A record of community activities and leadership positions in extracurricular activities with a promise of outstanding leadership in the future

Karri B. and David E. Jasperse Scholarship

The David and Karrie Jasperse Scholarship Fund awards a $750 scholarship to a Black River graduating senior who plans to enroll in a bachelors degree program in mathematics, science or engineering in a public college or university within Michigan.

Scholarship applicants will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
• Academic excellence as demonstrated by a minimum high school GPA of 3.0
• A record of community activities and leadership positions in extra curricular activities with a promise of outstanding leadership in the future
• Enrollment in a public Michigan college or university in a mathematics, science or engineering program
• Financial need is also a consideration

Scholarship recipients will be selected by the Scholarship Selection Committee of the Community Foundation of the Holland Zeeland Area.
