James R. Wiersma joined the Board of Trustees in the spring of 2014 and serves as Chair of the Investment Committee. James is the President of Family Investment and Resource Management LLC, the family office of the Haworth family in Holland, a position he assumed in August 2005. In that role he is responsible for all aspects of the management of the family's investment portfolios. He is also responsible for property and asset management, insurance, legal, estate and tax planning and compliance matters. Prior to that position, he had been the Treasurer of Haworth, Inc., a world-leading office furniture manufacturer, and its worldwide subsidiaries and affiliates.
As Haworth's Treasurer, a position he held for 17 years, Wiersma had worldwide responsibility for banking, short-term investments, benefit asset management, insurance and risk management, foreign exchange and the management of the legal activities for Haworth's worldwide operations. He has been very involved in the Company's merger and acquisition activities in the U.S. and abroad.
Wiersma joined Haworth in 1988 as Director, Finance Administration. He was appointed to the position of Treasurer in 1990 at which time his title was changed to Director, Treasury Services. He took on the additional responsibility of managing the company's legal activities in 1994.
A native of Grand Rapids, MI, Wiersma received a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Michigan and a Master of Business Administration from Bowling Green State University. Prior to joining Haworth, Wiersma had worked for ten years for Marathon Oil Company in the U.S. and abroad and for five years for Petro-Lewis Corporation in Colorado.
In addition to his role as a Community Foundation trustee, Wiersma holds other community leadership positions. He is an Investment Committee member for the Holland Christian Education Foundation, and is a Finance and Investment Committee member for Geneva Camp and Retreat Center. He also serves as a Board and Investment Committee member for MERS of Michigan.
